The legend of village of Veshtitsa

MUNICIPALITY OF BELOGRADCHIK, VIDIN DISTRICT

Veshtitsa is a village in northwestern Bulgaria. It is located in Belogradchik municipality, Vidin district. This village is one of the first settlements to emerge at the foot of the Balkan Mountains in the 17th century.

There is an interesting story about the creation of the village of Veshtitsa. There is a legend about a Turk who once had a farm in this place. Walking around his lands in the summer, he saw several Bulgarian women bathing in the local river. The sight, forbidden for its time, forced the Turkish farmer to flee, shouting “Witches, Witches … !!!”. Around the Liberation he left his farm and Bulgarian workers settled there and built the settlement.

Another legend says that there were three mills in the area. The local people were very good, i.e., knowledgeable, understanding of their craft. When the villagers returned to their native places and asked them where they came from, they replied, “From at witches.”
